The AnRe Look - Rudy 3 months old |
Ray and I began to develop what would be a long and loving relationship with Great Danes in 1978. Always animal lovers we saw a black puppy in the back yard of a lady who had no clue about the care and treatment of any animal much less our giant breed. We adopted that girl, Charcoal, and then rescued a merle who had a huge burned place on his leg as a playmate and companion to us and Charcoal. Charcoal lived to be 14 and Dusty to 8 years of age, dying when his beloved friend passed. We were so devastated, and we decided we did not want to live without a Dane in our lives. We began a quest to find a breeder of quality Danes and wanted to keep that quality in future generations. We wanted to show our puppy when we found one.
Through our friendships with folks in the Great Dane Club of El Paso, especially the Reeses, we found Rudy, ultimately, Ch. ALJAMAR’S Rudolph Valentino. He was all we could ever ask for in a Dane, loving, true to his name, beautiful in every way, and our best friend. Rudy came to us from Marilyn and Jack McMurdy of Pennsylvania (see Rudy’s page). Then we found Anita Langevin! Words cannot express my gratitude, love, and respect for this woman. She remains my mentor and friend. Reann’s, because of Anita, had that quality we had been searching for as we had found in Rudy. Reann’s Ahh Suzie Q of AnRe was to be our foundation bitch.
Suzie was out of Quaker Hill’s In the Mood and Ch. Reann’s Prestiges Parisienne. Suzie had 12 points including a major that she acquired at the Great Dane Club Of La. The story about Suzie and why she did not finish is true: She was in her second heat and in a crate in our living room; Rudy was loose in the room as he would settle down if he could just be close to her. Ray and I went to town for about an hour to get groceries, and when we got back, we found Rudy and Suzie tied. How he got her out of her crate, we never did find out, but the crate was collapsed. It was a wire crate...any takers on how they managed? Anyway they were our start for AnRe Great Danes. They produced CH AnRe’s Iago of Astro owned by Stephanie Griffith. Rudy produced other champions as well.
My beloved husband and partner in so many ways, passed away four years ago this past May. His Danes and I sorely miss him, but his memory and spirit lives on in his sons and family, our past champions, and me. There are so many people to thank throughout the years for their help, kindness, and appreciation of our Danes. If I forgot to name any of you, it is not because you are not important to me, and you know who you are.
